Week Five was spectacular. It began with Azerbaijani restaurant adventures and ended with an awesome relaxing Saturday.
After church on Sunday, Steven suggested we try out this Azerbaijani restaurant near the Pozniaky school - I went because it's right by my apartment, so why not? We walked over to it, but then all we could find was the sign. This resulted in maybe half an hour of walking around and around the block and going inside buildings, looking for this restaurant. It ended up being in the very first building we looked in, and needless to say, I wasn't the happiest person on the planet, it being Fast Sunday and all. We all sat down, but three of us decided we didn't want to wait on the slow Ukrainian service, so we walked back to the metro and got shawarma from my favorite stand. For dessert was a chocolate cake roll from Roshen. Delicious! The three of us got back to the restaurant just as the others were finishing up - pretty sure getting shawarma was the better decision because the others were still hungry after their more expensive meal. We found a bakery between the restaurant and our apartment, after which we sent the boys home while all the girls came over to our apartment for a little while.
That evening we went to another ballet, Sleeping Beauty. This time we knew exactly how to get to the opera house, so we weren't late, which made me happy because the orchestra warming up is one of my favorite parts. It was an amazing ballet, but super long. Half of the group left after the second act to go watch the Super Bowl online, and the rest of us left at 10, before the third act was over. It was enjoyable, but I would definitely pay for better seats next time - sitting in front of me was a lady with crazy hair, a lady who hogged the whole middle of the stage with her head, and a lady with a fuzzy Russian hat on.
Mackay and I don't teach until 3 every afternoon, so we have all morning to do whatever we want. On Tuesday we decided to go find Piezazhna Aleye, something we'd been wanting to do for a couple of weeks. We met up with Steven around 10, and away to Andriivskii Street we went. Talk about a perfect morning - the sun came up just for us and we had a ton of fun taking goofy pictures and exploring Andriivskii Street some more. Our story is best understood in pictures, so enjoy! Some of these are mine, but photo cred also goes to Mackay - P.S. I did not edit the St. Andrew photos, it was really that gorgeous!
I finally learned how to take a proper panorama! |
Saturday was spent reading in bed, a quick adventure to the grocery store, and then Clari and Alli came over for a sleepover. We ate pamelos and ice cream, and had a grand ole' time. The end.
Ten weeks left to live it up in Ukraine!
great photos! Love the cats.
ReplyDeleteHey, I am currently planning a trip to Ukraine through ILP and I ran in to your blog. I'm a little weary of going due to the media depicting the conflict situation over there getting worse and worse, but I figure it's best to hear from someone who's actually in the country! And so... I'm reaching out to you (very randomly, I know). I'm not sure how the comments system works in this, but if you could reply somehow I would be so grateful. Thank you!!
