The Genius of Small

Before I get to my actual blog subject for this week, SVU's blog has awesome pictures from the Mountain Days celebration I wrote about last week. Check them out, 'cause they're way better than mine were last weekend.         http://scoop.svu.edu/photos-mountain-days/
Alrighty, this week was Homecoming and I've been looking for an opportunity to do a post all about why SVU is so great, even though I've kind of been doing that already... I figured Homecoming week was a great excuse.

SVU has made a series of short videos, some of which I'll be sharing; one, because they showcase some of my professors and give you a taste of what campus is like and two, because I have been taught to back-up persuasive arguments with proof ;)
This first video is about having a liberal arts education, and although I love my classes and what I'm learning, I'm mostly sharing this one because it showcases my favorite professor, Professor MacDonnell. I am in his America and the Enlightenment class, which is basically an in-depth study of Unit 1 and Unit 2 from We The People last year. (For those of you who don't know what that means, we're studying what the Founding Fathers studied and how they applied that to the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.) Professor MacDonnell previously taught at both Harvard and Yale, and I'd just like to brag that I got an A on his first test.

Honestly, this post is mostly about how amazing my professors are, my history professors in particular, because they are why I love it here. All of my professors - professors, not TAs - know me by name, and are very willing to set time aside to help me or just talk. After a week of class, both of my history professors guessed that I am a History major. (I think it has something to do with the fact that I answered all of their questions correctly). They have both already offered to write me letters of recommendation, and help me get into any of the classes I'd like to take; as well as the National History Honors Society, which has a fancy name that I don't remember, but which is really hard to get into as a Freshman. Professor MacDonnell also found out that I'll be doing the Pre-Law Track, and has offered to introduce me to some of the law professors next year over at Washington and Lee - ranked #26 out of all law schools in the nation.
Or how about this weekend? Picture this: Isabelle and I have a European History class together, and the professor is a serious, no-nonsense kind of lady. Quite a few people I've talked to think she's scary. BUT. Isabelle and I also do Body Attack twice a week, and this professor comes too. We've not only gotten her to loosen up in class, but she GIGGLED the other day. (Isabelle and I just have that affect on people.) She found us during Homecoming activities on Saturday and hung out with us for a while. Who knew professors could be so much fun?
That, my friends, is the genius of small. How many other college students in the nation can say that they have NO TAs, that all of their professors learned their name after only a week of classes, and have already offered to write letters of recommendation?  And then have some of them also hang out with you over the weekend, because who wouldn't want to hang out with me?

I couldn't get the second video to load correctly, but it's a video restating what I just said, but more eloquently. I cannot describe how much I ADORE having teachers - all of my teachers - care about my education, want to help me as much as possible, and enjoy teaching me. I have been wanting and waiting for this since I very first started school!!
